Eric brings 36 years of industry experience leading, facilitating, and supporting critical operations and technologies in power plant operation, transmission, and large grid management systems. Eric founded GridSME to bring relevant experts into a common purpose to help facilitate the many changes in our industry.
Over the years Eric held leadership roles at Southern California Edison, California ISO, Midwest ISO, and WECC, serving in positions of Project and Technical Management, Plant Manager, EMS Manager, Manager of Reliability Applications, and Director of EMS/IT Services. These roles have focused on grid operations and technologies, IT leadership, project management, NERC compliance, and developing high performing teams in support of critical systems.

Lonnie is a former Director of Operations Business Development at the California ISO as well as a previous Power Scheduling Manager and Grid Operations Manager for CAISO. Lonnie is a co-founder of GridSME, with the same vision as Eric in helping clients manage change.

Chief Executive Officer
Throughout his career, John has demonstrated his ability to manage fast growing teams, complex technical projects, and customer relationships. He takes ownership and pride in every engagement, going above and beyond for both our customers and staff. John’s B.S. in Engineering and M.S. in Cyber Security, combined with his knack for business strategy, provides him the ability to balance technical and business objectives alike.
John is responsible for ensuring the success of GridSME's people and clients, in that order, while still playing an integral role with the GridSecurity division. His strong working knowledge of NERC compliance, coupled with hands-on experience implementing security controls in SCADA environments, allows him to employ pragmatic, risk-based solutions for our clients. John has years of experience implementing compliance programs, providing technical support and advisory services, delivering training, and conducting assessments.
Matt is an experienced consultant and financial executive in the energy consulting industry where he specializes in energy storage operations and modeling, the CAISO wholesale electricity markets, NERC compliance, asset management, finance, and internal controls.
Matt is an experienced consultant and financial executive with over a decade of experience leading teams in the compliance and energy industries, where he specializes in energy storage operations and modeling, the CAISO wholesale electricity markets, NERC compliance, asset management, finance, risk management, and internal controls. His background includes an array of asset management experience with Covanta’s California renewable generation assets, as well as internal controls and financial audit experience with Ernst and Young.
Tim has 27+ years of experience in the electric industry serving formerly as Manager of Operations at both the California ISO and the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District.

In addition to his intimate operations knowledge, he’s managed teams dedicated to NERC Reliability Standards compliance, Operations Training and Procedures, Smart Grid implementation, Real-Time Engineering Support and EMS. Tim’s been involved in renewable integration for over ten years and now works to aid renewable owners and operators in the development and implementation of their operational procedures with respect to the Bulk Electric System.
Gary Brown, P.E.
Engineering & Interconnection Services
Gary is a seasoned subject matter expert in the energy industry specializing in Grid Interconnection related services. Gary has over 35 years of experience as a consulting engineer and project manager supporting companies in power systems and interconnection related areas.
In his career, Gary has held various engineering and management responsibilities in the design and implementation of plant power and automation systems, renewable energy development, SCADA, security, and energy management for utilities, industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities. He has extensive experience in energy management, power generation, combined heat and power applications, and generation interconnection for industrial, utility, and public-sector organizations.
Erik brings 12 years of subject matter expertise within the electric utility industry to GridSME with an emphasis on electric substation protection system operation and maintenance and project management. He has extensive knowledge of protective relay testing, as well as experience managing projects, budgets, personnel, and managing field testing and compliance programs.
Prior to joining GridSME, Erik spent eight years as an Electric Utility Technician at Roseville Electric and three years at the City of Palo Alto as an Electrical Assistant. Erik has a bachelor’s in Public Administration from the University of La Verne.
Grid Technology Services
John has extensive experience with EMS, DMS, and OMS systems, having worked at ABB Network Management (significant EMS system for North America and internationally) for 24 years.
John has performed in lead technical and managerial positions on over 50 SCADA/EMS/GMS/DMS deliveries throughout the world, participating throughout the sales cycle, the development cycle, the testing cycle, the installation cycle, and the post-delivery support cycles. In his engineering roles Mr. McDaniel focused EMS (Energy Management Systems), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), DMS (Distribution Management Systems), and OMS (Outage Management Systems). As system architect and Director of Engineering for ABB he worked extensively on the design and delivery of the Network Manager EMS system currently in use by Commonwealth Edison.
Eric is an experienced NERC Compliance Manager with a demonstrated history supporting various utilities’ compliance programs. Eric brings a deep understanding of the CIP standards with experience developing and implementing both low and medium impact CIP programs. His utility background also gives him a versed understanding of the O&P standards related to GO, GOP, and BA entities.
At GridSME, Eric is part of our NERC compliance team as Director of Managed Services. In this role, Eric applies his CIP and O&P experience to supporting our clients enrolled in our Managed Compliance Services offering, providing peace of mind that their GO or GOP program is being taken care of in an ongoing basis.
Frank is a visionary leader with 20+ years’ engineering industry expertise. He is a specialist with outstanding technical and analytical aptitude combined with innovative problem-solving skills, strong communication, and proven talents in product engineering. Frank has domain expertise in electric utility compliance, planning, operations, and project management.
At GridSME, Frank leads the day-to-day operations of the engineering team, helping support interconnection activities of clients from developers, asset owners and operators in all areas of the US. Frank and the team provide wide ranging services, such as engineering studies, tariff and contract reviews, site surveys, NERC compliance, asset management, operations etc.
Patrick is GridSME's Director of Cybersecurity Services, specializing in Identity and Access Management. His skills in IAM architecture are utilized to provide GridSecurity’s clients with a streamlined and secure authentication platform at disparate locations.
With a background in IT infrastructure, Mr. Linnane brings a unique perspective to GridSecurity’s managed security services. By bridging the gap between technical and non-technical personnel he ensures clients understand what is being done for their critical infrastructure’s security. His extensive experience in Identity and Access Management ensures clients only have the best when it comes to managing their identities across multiple sites in a secure manner.
Frank Sforza, GridSME’s Director of Operational Services, brings over 10 years of solar experience to his engagements, having a background as a certified electrician as well as leading technical asset management teams. His combined experience gives him a strong perspective into successful navigating the real-world challenges in our industry.
At GridSME, Frank brings his deep field knowledge to our GridSec team, helping strengthen our existing managed security service offerings, as well as taking the lead on new service offerings we can develop to better support our clients.
Director of Marketing
Ryan steps into the Director of Marketing role and brings 17 years of marketing experience serving a variety of industries. Ryan’s expertise and skills include developing and implementing marketing strategies, developing educational material and collateral, communications, public relations, videography, social media, website design, graphic design, and implementing sales funnels and marketing campaigns.
At GridSME, Ryan will be responsible for helping develop and execute a robust marketing system to build our online presence, brand, and partnerships. He will also work with GridSME’s Practice Leads, SMEs, and leadership to continuously strengthen our client relationships.
Jason Murray, MBA
Managing Director of Canadian Operations
Jason has an MBA and 30 years of experience in the electricity industry in Alberta and BC specifically in Operations, Markets, NERC Standards, Compliance, Procedures, and Training as the former Director, Operations Services at the Alberta Electric System Operator (ISO).

Kevin is a registered professional electrical engineer in California with 25 years of experience in transmission planning, operations engineering, and power/control systems design.
For the past 15 years, Kevin has been focused on power system modeling with GE’s PSLF software and is proficient in power flow, post-transient governor-power flow, voltage stability, and transient stability analysis techniques. He is knowledgeable in the regulatory standards adopted by NERC, WECC, system operators and utilities. He has performed studies for system operators, utilities, and transmission developers throughout the western USA. Studies performed range from WECC three phase rating process studies to system impact studies. Furthermore, he has helped generation developers analyze interconnection locations, develop interconnection application requests, and address various needs throughout interconnection process.
Sr. Project Manager Power Generation, Demand Side Management, Fuel Supply
Lee is a 30+ year veteran of the industry with varied experience in many aspects of power and natural gas operations, contracting, engineering and sales.

For the past fifteen years Lee was the President of Cordner and Associates, Inc., a consulting company specializing in recruiting, selection, training and personal development.
Ron Olsen is an effective project leader and expert problem solver with advanced technical skills. He has had extensive experience in electrical utility interconnection management and processes of utility scale resources.
Ron’s advanced understanding of utility communications protocols has enabled him to work directly with clients, generation owners, field personnel, outage coordinators, as well as utilities’ interconnection staff to achieve successful completion of new and existing generator resources for various companies throughout California and the Western United States. He has a highly technical background with SCADA, RTUs and testing, and a complete understanding of the CAISO tariff for telemetry and metering, as well as CAISO outage coordination requirements.
TJ is an industry expert in the co-optimization of energy and ancillary services in deregulated nodal energy markets, compliance processes and procedures, and practical tools for grid and market operators.

Megan brings 16 years of experience working in incident management program management, business continuity management, Operations emergency communications, policy program management, and process improvement at the California ISO. She serves as Compliance Program Administrator for both Generator Owner and Generator Operator clients.

Marceda has served as a compliance consultant and manager for eight years. She has consulted for a number of large utilities and consulting firms, including ConEdison, Duke Energy, and Bridge. She is an expert in understanding security and quality control issues, implementing and managing compliance programs, and finding solutions to complex problems.
Marceda has extensive experience in writing policies and procedures and performing audits and risk assessments for both the 693 and CIP Reliability Standards. She has an MBA from the Indiana Institute of Technology and her Professional Certifications include Lean Six Sigma Kaizen Leader, Root Cause Analysis, Incident Investigation Training and MORT Certification from Conger & Elsea.
Sandra is a Compliance Program Manager as part of GridSME’s NERC/Regulatory compliance team. Sandra’s experience and strengths span both the CIP and 693 Reliability Standards, including experience managing medium impact CIP programs. Sandra also has extensive experience with PPAs and GIAs, vendor risk assessment programs, and personnel training.
In her role at GridSME, Sandra will be vital in supporting the growth of both the NERC and GridSecurity practices and in designing and implementing systems and processes that allow both teams to provide seamless CIP compliance and security services to our clients.
Kathy is an experienced Transmission Planning Engineer with a demonstrated history of working in the utility industry. Skilled in PSLF, electric power, and team building, Kathy brings strong engineering experience to GridSME’s clients where she performs engineering analysis and model validation in support of their NERC compliance programs.
Kathy's blend of engineering and NERC expertise make her uniquely qualified to support both the technical engineering analysis on generators as well as contribute to their ongoing compliance programs.
Greg is a seasoned professional with more than 40 years in the electrical industry and has held roles ranging from operations at steam power plants to the Director of Grid Operations at the California ISO.
In addition to his operations history, Mr. Van Pelt has significant experience interfacing with WECC and other regulatory entities such as FERC, the CPUC, and the CEC. Greg has provided expert testimony at both federal and state public hearings and participated on many of the resulting task forces and committees. Greg’s career also includes a number of operations and management roles at Southern California Edison. He is an excellent operations process and procedure resource and grid management expert.
Mr. Zaragoza’s broad experience over the last 40 years in Power System Operations and Emergency Management has provided him the foundation needed for effective leadership during challenging times in the electric utility industry. In addition to his long operational career, Daniel has been responsible for managing and executing utility response to major emergencies including major wildfires.
Utilizing his electric transmission and distribution operations and risk management experience to improve organizational safety and productivity, Daniel guides clients through the process of developing or enhancing their existing Wildfire Mitigation Plans. With a proven track record of major innovation and delivery of comprehensive solutions Daniel was a key contributor to building San Diego Gas & Electric’s Fire Coordination and Meteorological teams.
Tom has an extensive background in the electric industry with over 40 years of experience across a wide range of topics. He assists clients with CAISO market services and interactions, operations and planning processes, organizational issues, and regulatory compliance.
Tom’s experience includes generation and transmission operations, generation planning and forecasting, wholesale markets/energy procurement, compliance and regulatory interface. During his utility career, he held several senior management positions and was involved with multiple large-scale market and system implementations. He was an expert regulatory witness for 11 years, justifying the operation of a $4+ billion annual generation and purchased power portfolio. He is certified in Applied Project Management, and experienced in business resiliency as a trained National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Commander.
Mr. Watros is a power specialist with extensive experience in power plant and grid operations, long-range electric supply planning, procurement, and associated regulatory compliance requirements.

Julie is an energy industry subject matter expert on wholesale energy markets, settlements, and grid interconnection services.
Julianne has over 10 years of experience with the California ISO as a settlements analyst and more recently, as a Senior Client Trainer, developing and delivering instruction on new market initiatives. Julie has a broad foundation in financial analysis, contracts, compliance and is certified as an Instructional Designer/Developer and Project Management Professional.
Tim is a leader in the energy industry with over 25 years of expertise in renewable, distributed, and advanced technology energy development, electric grid integration, and electric market structure. Tim also brings experience in strategic planning, regulatory policy development, and market design for energy commodities.
At GridSME, Tim’s focus is on assisting clients to design strategic goals and optimize the value of their resource portfolios, including generation and transmission asset value. This includes conducting asset evaluations, developing strategies for market participation, conducting analyses for distributed generation, and smart grid micro-grid opportunities.
Scott is a proven professional with 38 years spanning a wide range of leadership experience including transmission and generation operations, NERC CIP and O&P Reliability Standards compliance, emergency operations, fire coordination and fire prevention planning, transmission and distribution construction and maintenance, vegetation management, and project management.
At GridSME, Scott supports clients with all things transmission and generation operations and planning, regulatory compliance and project management. Scott's long career at SDG&E also made him well versed in NERC CIP and O&P, as well as vegetation management and wildfire mitigation programs
Marco Salazar is a versatile subject matter expert in the power engineering industry. He has 18 years of proven experience in transmission planning, generation interconnection, power system studies, owner’s engineer, and design of transmission, distribution and generation projects.
Marco’s background in the US Navy and power engineering makes him an excellent resource to all engineering teams. Mr. Salazar carries hands-on experience in generator modelling, power flow and contingency analyses, transient stability, short circuit, and harmonics using software applications such as GE PSLF, Siemens PSSE/PSS Sincal, PSCAD, Aspen Oneliner/DistriView, AutoCAD, ETAP, and EasyPower. Marco also provides compliance support to Generator Owners in accordance with NERC Standards (TPL, PRC, MOD, FAC) across the United States.
At GridSME, Sarah provides power systems engineering and NERC compliance support to asset owners, developers, and operators. Ms. Majok’s past work experience has branched throughout the United States, and beyond, allowing her to leverage her knowledge of the various markets to accomplish tasks for clients in a magnitude of various locations.
Sarah has over 20 years of professional experience in the energy industry. She provides expert technical advisory services to electric utilities, solar and storage developers, and government agencies. Sarah has performed planning and development activities to support projects from the initial planning stages to construction and commissioning, has conducted numerous technical studies and has taken on leadership roles and managed projects in the regulatory arena.
Abbas is a highly knowledgeable and versatile Electrical Engineer and consultant with extensive experience in the regional, national, and international energy industry including in-depth power system (transmission, distribution and generation) design and engineering studies, and assessing energy-related regulatory and policy impacts on technology.
Prior to joining the GridSME team, Abbas enjoyed a long career at SDG&E from 1990 to 2006 and then Navigant Consulting from 2006-2017. After leaving Navigant in 2017, Abbas founded his own consulting firm – Abed Consulting. Abbas lives in San Diego, CA.
Marie brings over 34 years of utility industry experience to GridSME, primarily focused in transmission operations, asset management, NERC compliance, and regulatory strategy. Coming from Peak Reliability where she served as CEO, Marie is a proven industry leader whose depth and breadth of industry and operational knowledge provides a unique level of strategic foresight to all her engagements.
At GridSME, Marie will be part of the Engineering and Interconnection team, utilizing her transmission operations and asset management experience to support our client’s transmission asset reviews.
Angela has over eleven years of experience managing the implementation of technology and project management with industry experience including project/program management, FERC and CPUC (Rule 21, WDAT, ISO) Interconnection processes, new resource origination and implementation, and Software/SaaS Implementation.
As a Principal Consultant, Angela will be providing project management and coordination for new resources, account and client management, addressing regulatory changes and impacts as well as interconnections requests and application processing.
Protection & Control Systems Engineer
John is GridSME’s consulting engineer in protection and control systems as applied to electric power business. John specializes in protection system design, relay settings, fault analysis, relay coordination, arc flash analysis, and a variety of related system studies for utilities and industrial customers.
John has worked in low voltage 480V systems seen in large industrial facilities, medium voltage distribution and generation, and high voltage transmission systems through 500kV. John also has extensive experience in control design of utility class medium and high voltage substations, generation sites, and large industrial systems. John has worked in the industry since 1990 and is familiar with an extensive list of technical topics related to the design of protection systems for generation sites, transmission systems, substations, and has written many technical papers on power system analysis. He has an MSEE specializing in power system analysis.
Carl Kidwell is an expert PV Solar facility design engineer. Carl has over a decade of experience in design ranging from residential, commercial, to large utility scale PV solar generation facilities.
Carl is highly skilled in applying AutoCAD to his designs and has successfully implemented and revised existing CAD standards at every company he has worked for. Prior to joining GridSME, Carl spent many years working with EPCs, giving him invaluable first-hand experience designing efficient and cost-effective PV Systems.
Taylor McClain is a Subject Matter Expert in the energy industry. His experience in power systems includes Power Flow modeling and dynamic simulations, performing Interconnection Reliability Assessments such as thermal, voltage, and short circuit impacts, and is well versed in regulatory Generation Interconnection processes and procedures.

Antonio brings over 22 years of international technical leadership experience in the development, construction, operation, and continuous improvement of renewable energy and traditional generation technologies. He has deep experience defining and directing the overall technical strategies for renewable energy projects and can support GridSME’s clients from inception to operation.
At GridSME, Antonio will be working with the NERC team on technical GO compliance, as well as supporting a number of engineering clients through fatal flaw analyses, power flow assessments and impact studies, and various other support engagements.
Ryan is an Associate Power Systems Engineer, supporting GridSME's clients across a range of engineering, markets, and technical tasks. With his wide range of experience, he actively provides support to both GridSME clients as well as his fellow staff members.

Ayesha was born in Pakistan where power outages are a way of life instead of an inconvenience. Her passion for the energy industry stems from a tender age and has led her to GridSME. From modeling power flow to assisting with interconnection requests, Ayesha provides a variety of power systems engineering support to clients.
Ayesha comes to GridSME from the non-profit sector where she developed solar installation vocational training programs for formerly incarcerated individuals. Her experience combined with her B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley provide her with a unique and invaluable skillset to use and cultivate in the energy industry.
Mr. Kearney is a proven executive with a decisive leadership style and thirty years’ experience managing information systems, technology infrastructures, and technical staff. Bryan is experienced at developing and implementing I/T strategy and policies aligned with company objectives.

David is a Subject Matter Expert with 30 years of experience in the software engineering field. He is proficient in several programs, such as Windows and Linux, as well as scripting in Borne, Korn Shell, and more.
Mr. McDaniel has experience in System Auditing and Analysis. He has performed both security and NERC auditing. However, Mr. McDaniel’s specialty is System Design and Support. He has integrated systems like RANGER/ from ABB and various other performance tools and procedures. He has supported and configured systems for Ventyx/ABB. This includes 24/7 on call support for both EMS and DMS systems. He has also supported SCADA systems as well as performed day to day support for these systems.
Nicholas is a subject matter expert on integrating and securing SCADA systems and the networks that service them. He has spent 10 years helping electric utilities add cybersecurity to their cultures of safety and reliability.

Chad is GridSME's Senior Systems Security Engineer with a strong background in information security and assurance. He has much experience administering and securing Windows systems in accordance with stringent DoD security requirements. He is particularly strong in Domain administration and patch management.
At GridSME, Chad performs operational security activities on a daily-basis. His efforts include developing and monitoring baseline configurations, performing vulnerability assessments, patching critical systems, and account administration.
Senior Network Engineer
Aaron is a Senior Network Engineer with an extensive background in CIP and network communications. Aaron brings years of experience installing and managing a broad range of secure, high availability, real-time, and corporate IT initiatives, as well as designing and supporting server rooms and leading NERC CIP compliance programs.
At GridSME, Aaron brings his expertise to a number of clients, supporting the design of multiple control centers as well as providing compliance support, guidance, and oversight to numerous CIP compliance programs.
Andrey is a Network Operations Engineer specializing in building robust and scalable networks. Previously, Andrey was a Network Administrator at an Internet service provider where he was responsible for thousands of customers and devices.
Andrey has a knack for streamlining and standardizing processes, as well as continually learning new tools to help automate repetitive tasks to improve efficiencies. As part of the GridSecurity team, his daily task is ensuring secure communications across our managed sites.
Vinh is part of the GridSecurity team focusing on automating process, finding inefficiencies, and streamlining with code. Vinh also develops tools for integrating third party applications.
Prior to GridSME, Vinh served as an IT System Administrator, automating numerous tasks to improve company-wide workflow. While in this role he also provided SQL database management and other internal functions to provide necessary IT support for the company.
Network Security Engineer
Will is a Network Security Engineer that focuses on developing and maintaining client compliance procedures and documentation relating to the technical operational Reliability Standards.
Additionally, Will assists senior engineers in generation and transmission interconnection studies and other senior consultants in a multitude of projects and technical writing efforts. Prior to joining the GridSME team, Aaron was involved in process management where he worked to keep systems streamlined and effective. At GridSME, Aaron works to improve and update GridSecurity documentation and improve processes wherever possible. This focus on documentation combined with Aaron’s client support skills have made him a valuable member of the GridSec team.
Sonia is a Systems Security Engineer with a background in troubleshooting and management of operating systems and servers, as well technical and customer support.

Collin is a Business Development Associate with an analytical background. His efforts include proposal development, content creation and facilitation, client outreach and interface, and content editor.
Collin’s previous experience comes from an 18-month internship for the California Energy Commission contributing to the annual Integrated Energy Policy Report, among other research tasks. This coupled with a B.S. in Managerial Economics and a Minor in Political Science from UC Davis has given Collin a wide range of skills and experience to grow in the Energy Sector.
